The Great British Duck Race 2009 Reviewed

On September 6th 2009 The Great British Duck Race took place at Molesey Lock, near Hampton Court Palace. It was the third time the race had been held at the location and whilst the world record for duck racing (205,000) was broken the race had Duck Holiday, who gone to watch the proceedings, feeling rather blue. And that’s because this year the organisers had used blue ducks!

Now we’ve nothing against blue ducks, but a lock full of blue ducks just doesn’t have the same ducky delight a a dock full of yellow ducks. Apparently the blue was at the request of the sponsors and thankfully next year the 2010 race will revert back to the good old traditional yellow duck.

This was the first Great British Duck Race we’d attended and we were surprised by just how busy things were. People were all along the banks and bridges waiting for the ducks to come steaming out of the lock. Sadly that didn’t happen as the blue ducks were reluctant to leave their lock home and it took a couple of canoeists to encourage the mass of blue rubber to start “swimming” along The Thames.

The celebrity on hand this year to start the event was world renowned DJ Norman Jay – Duck Holiday only has one question about this guy though – “who is he”?

That aside it was a fun hour or two watching the start and seeing the ducks start their long journey and we’re already looking forward to 2010. Sadly our ducks didn’t make it home to scoop any prizes but the good news is that you can start buying ducks for the next event in October.

Bud Ducks Kicks Off Facebook Fan Page

Leave the first response September 24, 2009 / Posted in Rubber Duck

Fans of the popular Bud Ducks can now social network with other duck enthusiasts thanks to a brand new Facebook page. Bud Products have created a fans page to keep people up to date with all the latest news and happenings in their world. It’s a great way to see the latest ranges and find out what ducks are appearing next.

For example the latest news has Zodiac Ducks (all 12 starsigns on 12 different ducks), a Sharon Osbourne Duck and news of an 80s pop culture range coming soon. You can also see photos of the new luxury ducks – currently there’s the Zodiac Ducks, plus a collection inspired by peace and love!

Surprisingly there’s not that many duck lovers who have become fans just yet, but hopefully with a bit of a push and a brand spanking new website on the way, Bud Products will be able to reach out to fans via social networking.

We don’t think Bud Products are on Twitter, but if we find them we’ll let you know.

Flutter & Lola – 2009 Cancer Research Rubber Ducks

1 Comment August 20, 2009 / Posted in Rubber Duck

Every year a couple of designer ducks are launched in aid of Cancer Research. For example in 2007 Soapstar & Boydie were the designs. For 2009 the two ducks are called Flutter & Lola. Usually the ducks are only available from Cancer Research shops, but this year you can also buy them from I Want One of Those.

Of course, these ducks are sold to help raise money and awareness for Cancer Research, so it should be noted that IWOOT have bought then from Cancer Research UK Trading which gives all its taxable profits to Cancer Research UK. This means you can buy them, safe in the knowledge that a charity contribution is being made.

Flutter is the white duck with the pink butterflies whilst Lola is the pink duck with flowers. These aren’t the only ducks available from Cancer Research. This year there’s also a Judi Duck as designed by Dame Judi Dench and Ducks Libby Light Up, Petal, Camo and Blossom. There are also duck keyrings and a triple duck pack.

The Duck Hunter – Infra Red Duck Shooting Game!

Leave the first response August 19, 2009 / Posted in Duck Gadgets

It’s been a while since we spotted a cool duck gadget at I Want One of Those but this week they’ve launched a brand new one and it’s called The Duck Hunter. Based on the video game of the same name (no, we’d not heard of it either), for £29.99 you get an ultra-light flying duck with flapping wings and an infra-red gun. You send your duck into the air and then get to shoot at it!

The Duck Hunter

The duck flies in a random fashion and you have 40 seconds of duck shooting fun. If you hit the flying duck 3 times in the 40 seconds then you’ve “won” and it will fall to the ground. If nothing else it’s a lot more humane than real duck shooting!

The game can be played inside or outdoors (or at least until you lose the duck over the fence and you’re too embarrassed to ask the neighbours for your flying duck back). At £29.99 it perhaps is a bit expensive, but should provide plenty of entertainment at parties!
